What is this group?
This group provides a local space in the Tooting, London area for gay men (Gay, Bi and Trans men) to meet to speak and connect in the spirit of being authentic and real. Gay men have much in common in terms of a shared/similar way of being and a shared history of growing up and being gay. The group is conducted as an Encounter Group, which is an an environment that can help with self-awareness, growth and development, and with authentic connection with self and others.
The encounter group style was developed by Carl Rogers, an American psychotherapist, and stems from his approach to psychotherapy and personal growth and development, the person-centred approach. The group is unstructured in nature and can change each time depending on what people bring to discuss and who is in attendance. The group is a confidential space and people are asked to engage in a manner respectful of this and of others – this helps people feel safe and to be open to exploring experiences, challenges and beliefs in a safe, accepting and warm environment. See below for links to further information about Carl Rogers and encounter groups so you can get a further idea about what they are like.

Quotes by Carl Rogers
“In such a group the individual comes to know himself and each of the others more completely than is possible in the usual social or working relationships.”
“There is no organised encounter group. There is simply a freedom of expression - of feelings and thoughts - on any personally relevant issue.”
“I believe that individuals nowadays are probably more aware of their inner loneliness than has ever been true before in history.”
